Weighted Blankets and Sleep

Weighted blankets are all the rage right now. They're one of the hottest sleep accessories out there for a very good reason: They work! Just like any product out there, you can find hundreds of variations, but let's talk about weighted blankets in general before we get too specific.

A weighted blanket is exactly what it sounds like - an extra heavy blanket. Sometimes they are knit out of extra heavy and thick material, but usually the added weight comes from beads or sand or tiny pellets (often plastic). We've even seen homemade weighted blankets made with beans inside! As you can imagine, that results in a blanket that feels like laying underneath a bean bag, because well, you kind of are.

Why add weight to a blanket? It's based on the science of human bodies and touch. We respond very positively to being embraced, hugged, or cuddled. A wailing baby can be quieted down by a tight swaddle, which gives your body a sense of safety and security. It also helps tremendously in giving sore, aching muscles some relief.

Scientifically, the changes that happen when using a weighted blanket have been noted. Stress hormone cortisol drops, at the same time as your feel-good hormone serotonin and your sleep hormone rises. This results in an overall boost in mood and ability to relax and sleep. It doesn't solve everything, and some people need more support than that. But if you're looking for a gentle push in the right direction, a weighted blanket can make a huge difference in your ability to sleep and unwind after a stressful day.

If you've changed your mattress, your pillow, your sleep habits, and are still stuck awake night after night, we encourage you to try out a weighted blanket. They can make all the difference in your sleep. And they're fantastic for helping anyone with anxiety, ADHD, or any other sort of issues related to your ability to sleep or relax.

We carry the TRUBlanket at our Mattress Outlet stores. It's extremely well-made, with smaller pockets, non-toxic glass pellets, and premium materials and construction. Ask our Sleep Specialists more about this premium weighted blanket.
